~ From the Director ~

We delayed the October edition in the hope that there would be some positive
information or direction that we might be able to offer concerning the flu
vaccine. Unfortunately, there is still such turmoil that we cannot make any
concrete suggestions at this point. I expect by next month we will be able to
offer some suggestions.

Last month I attended the Second International Conference on Cancer on the
Internet. At the conference I had the opportunity to meet a number of
individuals who have created exceptional Internet websites that provide
critical information and resources for cancer patients. Over the next few
issues we will be providing you with information and links to some of these
sites.

Lung cancer is still the number one cause of cancer deaths for men and women.
So for this month's Feature Article we are providing you with information about
the best and most comprehensive lung cancer site on the Internet. The site was
founded and continues to be directed by a patient, Karen Parles, who is herself
a lung cancer survivor.

If you are helping someone battling lung cancer, make sure they know about this
site.

POLITICS

In case you missed the news, there is an election coming up next month.

I know that everyone has had their fill of speeches, debates, posturing, spin
(and more spin) and advertisements. As a patient and a patient advocate I am
compelled to mention an aspect of the debate on stem cell research and the
sanctity of life that I haven't heard discussed during the Presidential campaign.

I understand the position of opponents of stem cell research that the use of
embryos for stem cell research is the destruction of life. Yet there does not
seem to be any acknowledgment or recognition of how lives can be destroyed by
illnesses such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. These diseases can have
a terrible impact on and diminish the sanctity of life of the people we love.

Unless we realize that the sanctity of life is involved on both sides of this
debate we can never come to a fair understanding of what is right.
And it seems that our lives and the lives of those we care about will continue
to be devastated by these and similar diseases unless scientists are allowed to
explore the use of stem cell therapy.

~ Patient Best Practices Feature Article:"Lung Cancer Information on the Internet"~

Lung Cancer is still one of the most intractable and deadly forms of cancer. It
occurs in smokers, people subjected to second hand smoke and non-smokers.

Karen Parles, a non-smoker who was never subjected to second hand smoke, was
diagnosed with advanced lung cancer when she was 38. After she recovered from
lung cancer Karen, who is a librarian, dedicated herself to helping other lung
cancer patients by starting a foundation and creating a website containing
detailed lung cancer information and resources.

The name of Karen's foundation is the Lung Cancer Online Foundation. Their
website is Lungcanceronline.org.

The Lungcanceronline.org site contains a trove of information and resources for
Lung Cancer patients and their families. The site includes background and
treatment information for both large and small cell lung cancer, specialty
hospitals and physicians, support and resources, tests and procedures, medical
literature and detailed links to other lung cancer related websites. The site
is very intuitive and easy to use.

To find information on the Lung Cancer Online Foundation site

Go To:

1. The Lung Cancer Online Foundation:
www.lungcanceronline.org

2. On the Home Page you will find a bullet pointed list of different categories
of information (such as "Treatment Options") that Lung Cancer patients and their
families will want to know about.

3. To get to the information you are interested in simply click on the Heading
for that information.

~ Humor ~

Rodney Dangerfield passed away last month. Here are some of his classic lines:

I saw my psychiatrist. I told him, "Doc, I keep thinking I'm a dog." He told me
to get off his couch.

My doctor told me to watch my drinking. Now I drink in front of a mirror.

One time my whole family played hide and seek. They found my mother in Pittsburgh

Oh, my wife loves vacations. The other night she told me, "I wanna go someplace
I've never been before." I took her to a men's room

People say fish is good for a diet. But fish should never be cooked in butter.
Fish should be cooked in its natural oils - Texaco, Mobil, Exxon...

I'll tell you one thing, I know how to satisfy my wife in bed, yeah, I leave

When I was a kid I got no respect. I worked in a pet store. People kept asking
how big I get.

I come from a stupid family. During the Civil War my great uncle fought for the
west!

My mother never breast fed me. She told me that she only liked me as a friend.

I could tell that my parents hated me. My bath toys were a toaster and a radio.

When my old man wanted sex, my mother would show him a picture of me.

I was so ugly, my mother used to feed me with a slingshot!

I tell you, with my doctor, I don't get no respect. I told him, "I've swallowed a
bottle of sleeping pills." He told me to have a few drinks and get some rest.

If you need a good laugh you can go to Rodney Dangerfield's website:
www.rodney.com. It offers an archive of some of his jokes and video clips of his
performances.

Feel Good!
