~ From the Director ~

Recently, one of the members of our staff needed to have thyroid surgery.
Her regular physician recommended a surgeon, whom she met with. Although
she trusted her primary doctor, she was uncomfortable with the surgeon
and decided as a precaution to check his background.

Using the information provided in our WebGuides and some basic search
logic, she discovered that the surgeon had four malpractice actions
against him in the past few years. She decided to find another surgeon?

It has also been in the news that one of Vice President Cheney's primary
heart doctors, who was Chairman of the George Washington University
Medical Center's General Internal Medicine Division, was dismissed from
him post due to alleged prescription drug abuse.

Doctors make tremendous efforts and sacrifices for the sake of their
patients. At the same time, we place our lives in our doctor's hands.
With the huge responsibility we give to our doctors, it is only sensible
to try to be certain that are trust in them is well placed.

So for this month's Patient Best Practices article we are providing you
with a site from our Webguides as well as search logic you can use to
check your doctor's background.

Also a reminder, if your WebGuide Report Subscription has or is about
to expire, don't wait to renew it. There have been many significant
changes and additions in our quarterly updated WebGuide Reports. Your
health is too important to risk on outdated information or resources.

~ Patient Best Practices Feature Article: "What's Up Doc? - Checking
Up On Your Doctor ~

It is extremely important to know your doctor's background. Particularly
in the case of surgeons and other doctors performing complex procedures.

The AIM Docfinder, provided by the Administrators in Medicine and the
National Organization of State Medical and Osteopathic Board of Directors,
provides information and links to twenty state Medical Boards. Using
this site, and depending on the state, you can find background, malpractice,
and sanction information about medical doctors.

To use the site:

1.Go to the home page at: www.docboard.org

2.Click on "Doc Finder" on the left hand side

3.Select the state for your search

4.Follow the directions provided in the state site that you have chosen

If the AIM Docfinder does not have information for your state, you can
try the following search:

Using a search engine (we like Google) enter the name of your state
(ex. "New Mexico") and the words "physician" (or "doctor," or "medical
doctor") and the word "malpractice" (or "sanctions" or "professional
misconduct"). Note: if you haven't done a search before, don't use
the "" around the words you are including in your search.

It may take a few attempts and different word combinations to find the
information you are looking for. And one additional tip - once your
search results come back, be sure to look past the first few pages in
order to find the information you are seeking.

A monkey walks into a bar and asks the bartender: "Do you have any
bananas?" The bartender replies: "This is a bar, we don't sell bananas."

So the monkey walks out.

The next day, the monkey comes back into to the bar and asks: "Any
bananas?" The bartender says: "I told you yesterday - this is a bar -
We don't have bananas!"

So the monkey leaves.

The next day, the monkey walks into the bar and asks the bartender: "Any bananas?"

The bartender yells at the monkey: "I keep telling you this is a bar
and We Don't Have Bananas! If you ask me again I'll grab you and nail
you to the bar!!"

The monkey turns around and walks out.

The next day the monkey walks into the bar. The monkey looks at the
bartender. The bartender stares at him. Finally, the monkey asks:
"Do you have any nails?" The bartender looks at him and growls: "No!"

"Good!" The monkey replies - "Got any bananas?"
