~ From the Director ~

I'm pleased to announce that we are adding a new series of articles to our
Website. The series is entitled "Maintaining Your Professional Life
While Coping With Illness." The articles in the series are written by
our Business and Technology Editor, Michael Rose. Michael has both a legal
and an engineering degree and had a tremendous struggle returning to his
professional life after he was stricken with Meningitis and fell into a
coma. Michael is authoring this unique series of articles to fill the need
for patient information on available and suitable technologies for
continuing to work while in the hospital and at home.

The first article in the series is an introduction to the topic and focuses
on the main software platforms available to PC users. It can be found in
the Archives Section of the Patient2Patient Website
(www.Patient2Patient.net). From the Home Page click on the
"Archives" link to access this and upcoming articles.

If you have any questions about the article or work related technologies
for patients you can contact Michael via email at Mrose@Patient2Patient.net.

Summer is the time for vacations and travel. But for patients any kind of
travel involves health concerns. Understanding this, The Center For Disease
Control offers terrific health resources and information on its travel site.
In our Feature Article we discuss how you can use this site to prepare for
a safe and healthy trip.

Enjoy your summer!

~ Quotation of the Month ~

"We are in the world to make a difference, and everything we do changes
the world. The greatest thing in the world is not so much where we are,
but in what direction we are moving."

~New Website Feature - "Maintaining Your Professional Life While Coping
With Illness"~

As part of our mission, Patient2Patient provides specialized information to
assist patients and caregivers in the many challenges that they face. One of
the greatest challenges for patients is returning to their work life during or
after an illness.

Michael Rose, our Business and Technology Editor, is writing a series of
articles on the best technologies to assist patients in continuing to work and
returning to work after an illness. Michael brings a background in engineering
as well as his practical understanding as a patient to this series of articles.
The articles in this series will cover topics that include computer software
and features that are most compatible with patients' requirements,
communications devices and software, wireless equipment and the use of different
technologies in the hospital and home environment.

The first of these articles, comparing the available PC software platforms, can
be found on The Patient2Patient Website. It is available to all patients and
caregivers. To access these articles:
Go To our Home Page - www.Patient2Patient.net. From the Home Page click on

~ Patient Best Practices Feature Article: "Summer Travel - A Health
Information Travel Site"~

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has put together a superb
site to assist travelers with every aspect of travel related health concerns.
Although the site's primary focus is international travel, it is useful for
anyone with an illness or chronic condition who is traveling.

Some of the topic areas that will be of interest to patients are: Vaccinations,
Safe Food and Water, Travel Medicine, Illness or Injury While Abroad, and
Special Needs Travel. General health related topics include: Cruise Ship and
Air Travel, Traveling With Children and Traveling With Pets.

The site lets you select from a series of topic areas and then compile
information on your choices to make your own travel health itinerary. The
information that you can compile and print out in your own travel itinerary
includes Potential Hazards for Specific Destinations and Prevention of Specific
Infectious Diseases. Most useful are the topics under Pre and Post Travel Health
Recommendations which includes The Traveler's Health Kit and Seeking Health
Care Abroad.

Anyone with a chronic health condition should take a few minutes and review the
Traveler's Health Kit. And the Seeking Health Care Abroad section contains
descriptions and links to International Health Assistance Organizations that
will help you find proper health care while traveling outside of the US.

Perhaps the most important topic for many patients is The Imunocompromised
Traveler which comes under the section entitled Advising Travelers With
Specific Needs.

Finally, under the topic Non-Infectious Risks While Abroad there is very
useful information on less serious health problems such as Jet Lag, Motion
Sickness, Sunburn and Injuries.

One note, the information is provided by the CDC, so it can be a little
technical. If you have any questions you should consult your doctor. And of
course you want to speak with your doctor about any travel you will be doing
and any health related precautions you should take. Depending on the severity
of your condition you might want to ask your doctor about medical centers or
doctors that he or she can recommend in the area you will be traveling to.

The CDC Travel Health Information site is also known as "The Yellow Book."

To use the site Go To:
http://www2.ncid.cdc.gov/travel/yb/utils/ybDynamic.asp#sn0
(You can copy and paste this into your browser)

On the Home Page you will find links to all the topic areas described above.

~ Humor ~

This month's humor is a selection of quotes from Steven Wright:

All those who believe in psychokinesis raise my hand.
The early bird gets the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese.
The problem with the gene pool is that there is no lifeguard
Everyone has a photographic memory. Some just don't have film.
I went to a restaurant that serves "breakfast at any time". So I
ordered
French Toast during the Renaissance.
What happens if you get scared half to death twice?
If Barbie is so popular, why do you have to buy her friends?
Eagles may soar, but weasels don't get sucked into jet engines.
For every action, there is an equal and opposite criticism.
If you were going to shoot a mime, would you use a silencer?

I planted some bird seed. A bird came up. Now I don't know what to feed it.
A cop stopped me for speeding. He said, "Why were you going so fast?"
I said,
"See this thing my foot is on? It's called an accelerator. When you push
down
on it, it sends more gas to the engine. The whole car just takes right off.
And see this thing? This steers it."
I Xeroxed a mirror. Now I have an extra Xerox machine.

I spilled spot remover on my dog. Now he's gone.
Sponges grow in the ocean. That just kills me. I wonder how much deeper the
ocean would be if that didn't happen.
I put instant coffee in a microwave oven and almost went back in time.
A clear conscience is usually the sign of a bad memory.
If you must choose between two evils, pick the one you've never tried before.
I replaced the headlights in my car with strobe lights, so it looks like I'm
the only one moving.

Feel Good!
